As I sat for my prayers this morning, Holy Spirit guided my attention to a particular scripture. The beauty of when he guides is that, while I would have read the same scripture multiple times as fact, thinking I was reading the word of God, really, without the Holy Spirit, they are just ink on paper with no revelation. He reveals the word of my Abba.
As I write this blog, my intention is to encourage you to not just read the bible as a checkbox to tick during the day as a Christian but to meditate over it.
Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.” (Psalm 1:2)
I often had questions about meditating over scripture meant specially as I had just started my journey with Holy Spirit. Meditating over scripture is not passive act. It is an active engagement with the word of God. This is where we need to understand the difference between reading the Bible and meditating on it.
You can read the words, and you can even understand all the facts. You can choose to take out your study bible and read the context, or dig up multiple theological articles to understand it. I can guarantee you will have enough material for your presentation that you can then share with someone. You have lost the plot right there….
Meditating on the scripture is letting the words sink into your “Spirit”
It is when a verse stays with you, it always rings in your head. When you sit with it until it begins to shape your thoughts, your emotions and perspective. When the dots connect.
All of this is impossible unless you are In Spirit. By that I mean, unless you are praying in Spirit. Holy Spirit reveals the deeper meaning of the words. The scripture moves from your mind to your heart. God’s voice becomes personal and clear; you begin to live what you read.
It becomes less about information and more about transformation..
As I started my journey in Spirit and he started guiding me on how to read the scriptures, my friend and guide told me a very important thing.
There was no rush. There was no award to rushing or completing the task. The reward was the transformation, and hence, taking time was important. He asked me to read one verse at a time. It was incredible because, as I was having this conversation with my husband after the revelation while making coffee this morning, it turned out that he got the same message a few weeks ago and, since then, has been reading a verse at a time. It is incredible when our comforter, our friend and our guide – Holy spirit guides us through everything.
Pick one verse at a time. Read it slowly. Repeat it to yourself in stillness and quiet. Think about it. Pray to Holy Spirit about revealing to you what Abba is saying to you. Holy Spirit, what are you hearing from Abba – reveal it to me.
Don’t rush.. wait for Holy Spirit to talk to you…Sit with Abba not to get quick answers but to just be with him..
Sometimes friends, one verse .. held gently has the potential to change your entire life.
As I finish writing this blog, I pray that Holy Spirit would stir in you the passion to read and meditate on God’s word.
May you hear Him in the stillness,
know Him in truth,
and walk with Him in every step.
